Akron City Council on Monday agreed to increase the fees the Akron Fire Department charges insurance companies for transporting people to the hospital.

The fees are tiered and vary by the severity of the injury and care provided. They are climbing from $450 to $600, $600 to $700 and $600 to $800.

The proposal also boosted the fee for mileage from $10 to $12 per mile.

The fees haven’t been increased since 2011.

Akron leaders have said city residents won’t see any bills or out-of-pocket expenses. The fees are paid by the insurance companies and the city does not go after payment from residents even if their insurance company doesn’t pay the entire fee, they said.

The city does seek payments from nonresidents if their insurance companies don’t pay.

The proposal adds a new fee for nonresidents who receive treatment but refuse to be taken to the hospital. The fee is now $200.
