ARCANUM, OHIO: Investigators say a small plane that crashed in rural western Ohio, killing two men, was controlled by a student pilot who shouldn’t have been flying with a passenger.
The National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report says the plane took off from a private grass strip without a flight plan the morning of Sept. 14 and crashed in a cornfield about an hour later. The single-engine aircraft crashed in Arcanum, some 35 miles northwest of Dayton.
Authorities say the crash killed 20-year-old Clayton Heins and 19-year-old Jacob Turner. They say Heins was controlling the plane.
NTSB investigator Mark Folkerts says Heins had a student pilot’s license and shouldn’t have had a passenger.
The report says a Facebook video post by Turner helped investigators determine the plane was near the grass strip.
