Veterans Day events planned in Akron area

Here are some of the Veterans Day events planned for the Akron area, compiled from announcements submitted to the Beacon Journal:

Thursday-Friday

9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Canton — Pro Football Hall of Fame, 2121 George Halas Drive NW. All veterans and military of every branch will receive one free admission for themselves and a spouse or one guest throughout November.

10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Akron — Akron Zoo, 500 Edgewood Ave. Free admission to all military personnel and veterans. A military ID is required. Immediate family receives 50 percent discount.

Thursday

10 a.m., Copley Township — Akron General Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, 3358 Ridgewood Road. Celebration in outdoor Veterans Remembrance Garden. The community is invited. Honor guard ceremony by Copley American Legion and VFW posts. Color guard by Garfield High School’s Navy Junior ROTC. Refreshments and tours of the care center. Guest speaker will be Ron Oskar, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He will share his experience of returning to Vietnam as part of the Warriors Journey Home organization’s 2010 Healing Tour.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Orrville — Wayne College, 1901 Smucker Road. Third annual Veterans Day luncheon and recognition ceremony will be in the Student Life Building. Ohio Sen. Frank LaRose will be the keynote speaker. Free to veterans and family members.

Friday

8 a.m., Akron — University of Akron Student Union Ballroom B. Continental breakfast for area veterans and a ceremony. Speaker will be retired Lt. Col. Bradley P. Harvey, director of military/veteran student programs at UA.

8 to 10 a.m., Stow — Stow-Munroe Falls High School, 3227 Graham Road. Breakfast for veterans and their families. Performance by the school choir.

8 a.m., Macedonia — Nordonia High School, 8006 S. Bedford Road. Program and breakfast features U.S. Marine Sgt. Erich Setele, a 2004 Nordonia graduate. Also, bagpiper Doug Risley and the Nordonia choir. All veterans and active military from the community are invited. Participants should assemble in the small gym in back of the school by 7:45 a.m.

8 and 11 a.m., Northfield — Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield Park. One free breakfast or lunch buffet will be offered to veterans at the Fresh Harvest Buffet. Breakfast served from 8 to 10 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Rocksino also will hold a ceremony featuring several veterans and a color guard beginning at 10:45 a.m.

8:30 a.m., Lake Township — Lake High School, 1025 Lake Center St. NW. Annual celebration will host veterans and their families. Informal reception at 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. Speakers and music in the gym from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Participants should enter Door No. 5 by the YMCA entrance.

9 a.m., Bath Township — Revere High School, 3420 Everett Road. All residents of the Revere schools community are invited to attend the Veterans Day program and assembly. The day’s events begin with a free breakfast for all veterans and their guests. The assembly will take place starting at 10 a.m. in the high school gymnasium.

9 a.m., Plain Township — Central Fire Station, 1742 Schneider St. NE. Second annual Salute to Veterans. Breakfast provided by Mission Barbecue. Blue Star Memorial Monument dedication. Keynote speaker is retired Maj. Gen. Dan Hahn. Veterans Memorial Monument dedication at 10:50 a.m., followed by Taps. Flag retirement ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

10 a.m., Akron — University of Akron, at Coleman Commons. A wreath-laying ceremony takes place. UA President Matthew Wilson will speak before cadets conduct a 21-gun salute. There will also be a celebration on InfoCision Stadium’s third-floor Musson Veterans Lounge from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided, free and open to the public. Also on the third floor, a Veterans Resource Fair will also be held.

10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Akron — Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, 714 N. Portage Path. All veterans and those currently serving in the military will receive a free self-guided tour of the building and grounds. Veterans must present military ID upon arrival.

10 a.m., Tallmadge — Historic Church on Tallmadge Circle. Program for area veterans and citizens. It will include speakers, the Tallmadge High School band and a 21-gun salute.

10:45 a.m., Green — Green Veterans Memorial Park, 1900 Steese Road. A ceremony will be held. Afterward, a light lunch will be served at John Torok Community and Senior Center, 4224 Massillon Road. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will he held at Queen of Heaven’s New Parish Life Center, 1800 Steese Road. Parking is available at the fire station, community center and church.

11 a.m., Cuyahoga Falls — Veterans Memorial, Broad Boulevard at Front Street. Flag raising, wreath ceremony and gun salute. Speaker will be U.S. Marine Corps veteran Robert Stauffer.

11 a.m., Ravenna — Ravenna Courthouse, 203 W. Main St. The Portage County Board of Commissioners will recognize families of fallen heroes and living veterans at a remembrance service at the Veterans Memorial. The Rootstown High School marching band and choir will perform. Keynote speaker will be Ohio Sen. John Eklund. “Missing Man” formation flyover.

11 a.m., Canton — Westbrook Veterans Memorial Park, 13th Street Northwest and Harrison Avenue Northwest. Memorial service held. Veteran of the Year Richard L. Biedenbach will be honored.

11 a.m., North Canton — Bitzer Park, 200 S. Main St. Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial. Veterans and the public invited. Includes the reading of veteran-themed essays by North Canton Middle School students.
