TOLEDO, OHIO: One of four men with Ohio ties accused of sending money to a prominent al-Qaida leader is asking to be released from behind bars until he goes to trial.

Attorneys for the suspect who studied engineering at Ohio State University propose that he be put on home detention and stay with his family near Atlanta in Duluth, Georgia.

Prosecutors will ask a federal judge in Toledo on Thursday to deny the request. They say in court documents that Asif Ahmed Salim has spent the last four years living outside the United States and that he’s a flight risk.

Salim’s attorneys have denied his involvement in what prosecutors say was an effort to raise money for an al-Qaida leader linked to the planning of several attacks against American interests.
